How to Measure Caster Wheels and Determine Caster Size Before RFQ

Start With Caster Wheel Size: Diameter and Tread Width

When buyers ask how to measure caster wheels, wheel diameter is usually the first measurement to confirm. It is not the only dimension a factory needs. Measure the outside diameter of the wheel and the tread width across the rolling surface.

A small difference in wheel diameter can change rolling height, furniture clearance and how easily the product moves over floor gaps. Tread width can affect stability, floor contact and wear.

• Measure wheel diameter across the full outside edge.
• Measure tread width at the rolling surface.
• Send photos with a ruler or caliper when possible.

Measure Overall Height, Stem Size and Plate Size

Overall height is the distance from the floor to the top of the mounting point when the caster is installed. This matters for furniture height, equipment balance and replacement projects.

The mounting type should be described clearly so the supplier can determine caster size and fit. Common examples include stem, plate, insert rod and other custom mounting structures. If the mounting part is hidden inside a chair base or cabinet, send photos from more than one angle.

• Overall height from floor to mounting top.
• Stem diameter and stem length if the caster uses a stem.
• Plate length, width, hole spacing and hole diameter if the caster uses a plate.
• Thread type or insert fit when applicable.

Record Material, Brake and Swivel Requirements

A measurement checklist should also include the working requirement. Two caster wheels can have the same size but behave differently if one uses PU and another uses PA, rubber or PVC.

If the wheel has a brake, record whether it locks the wheel, the swivel, or both. For medical or equipment applications, central lock or double brake details should be confirmed by drawing or sample.

• Wheel material or floor condition if material is unknown.
• Brake, no brake, swivel, rigid or central lock requirement.
• Color, finish and visible appearance needs.
• Noise, floor protection or wear resistance expectations.

Add Load, Floor and Quantity Before Asking for Price

A factory quotation should not be based on size alone. Buyers should include the equipment weight, cargo weight, number of casters used, floor condition and movement frequency.

Order quantity also affects whether the factory can review standard models, current stock, custom color, tooling or packing options. If the quantity is not fixed, provide an estimated range and the destination country.

Use Photos and Drawings to Reduce Back-and-Forth

The fastest RFQs usually include product photos, mounting close-ups, simple dimensions and application photos. A drawing is helpful, but a clear sample photo can still help the supplier understand the structure.
