Installation clearance and OEM sample approval
Caster Swivel Radius and Clearance: Prevent Collisions Before Your OEM Order
Check caster swivel clearance before ordering. Compare calculated wheel envelopes, request full brake and fork dimensions, and approve an installed sample.
Key takeaways
- Wheel diameter, mounting height and swivel clearance describe different parts of the fit. Request a dimensioned drawing of the exact caster variant.
- In a hypothetical 100 mm diameter, 32 mm wide wheel, changing offset from 25 to 45 mm increases the calculated wheel-only sweep radius from 76.69 to 96.34 mm. Forks and brake pedals can extend farther.
- Approve the caster on the actual equipment through its full swivel and brake travel. Public XIN JIE model pages provide procurement starting points, but do not establish the complete rotating envelope.
Introduction
The mounting holes line up, but the brake pedal strikes a cabinet leg when the caster turns. That is a fit problem a diameter check can miss. Before buying a replacement or approving an OEM layout, compare the complete rotating envelope with the space under your equipment.
This guide is written for global B2B buyers who need practical supplier, product and application information before sending a caster wheel RFQ.
What is caster swivel radius, and why does it affect fit?
For a clearance review, define the swivel radius as the greatest horizontal distance from the vertical swivel axis to any rotating part in the configuration being checked. Ask the supplier what its dimension includes: wheel only, fork, axle hardware, or the complete brake assembly. Catalog terminology can differ.
Blickle distinguishes wheel diameter, total mounting height and offset in its technical definitions. Offset is the horizontal separation between the swivel axis and wheel axle. A larger offset changes where the wheel travels around the mounting axis; matching the wheel diameter alone does not match that path.
A caster can clear the frame when aligned straight ahead and hit it during a reversal. Check the full rotation, including intermediate positions. For recessed cabinets, add the kick plate, welds, fasteners and adjacent casters to the drawing rather than comparing only with the outer cabinet edge.

How can buyers estimate the wheel-only swept envelope?
Use this geometry as an early screening calculation. Assume a single upright cylindrical wheel with diameter D, width W and its center plane aligned with the offset F. All dimensions are in millimeters. The rectangle enclosing its top-view projection has its farthest corner at F + D/2 along the rolling direction and W/2 across it. Its swept radius is R = sqrt((F + D/2)^2 + (W/2)^2).
The chart holds D at 100 mm and W at 32 mm and changes only F. These are hypothetical engineering inputs, not dimensions of a listed XIN JIE model. For F = 35 mm, R = sqrt(85^2 + 16^2) = 86.4928… mm, rounded to 86.49 mm. The wheel-only swept diameter is 172.99 mm when calculated from the unrounded radius.
This calculation bounds an ideal wheel projection. It excludes fork thickness, axle ends, brake pedals, tread deformation, bearing play and installation tolerances. It does not demonstrate steering effort, load capacity, stability or safe operating speed. Use the supplier’s full assembly envelope for the final installation check.
Unit: mm radius · bars start at zero
Original geometric calculation, 26 October 2026; not an experiment or product rating. D = 100 mm; W = 32 mm; R = sqrt((F + D/2)^2 + (W/2)^2). Upright single wheel, centered width, rigid geometry; other caster components excluded. Values rounded to 0.01 mm for reproducibility, not an implied manufacturing tolerance.
| Offset F | Wheel-only radius R | Wheel-only sweep diameter 2R |
|---|---|---|
| 25 mm | 76.69 mm | 153.38 mm |
| 35 mm | 86.49 mm | 172.99 mm |
| 45 mm | 96.34 mm | 192.68 mm |
Same assumptions as the chart. Compute each result before rounding. No XIN JIE model is assigned these dimensions. Geometry derived in the adjacent text; Blickle’s linked guide supplies the offset and diameter terminology, not these calculated results.
How much space should remain beside a wall or another caster?
Once the complete rotating assembly radius is confirmed, compare it with the mounting-axis location. For a straight stationary wall, axis-to-wall distance must exceed the relevant envelope radius plus the clearance allowance chosen for the equipment. Check at the heights where the parts overlap: a top-view circle alone can be conservative or miss a projecting part at another level.
For two assemblies whose rotating parts can occupy the same height, a conservative full-circle check is center spacing at least R1 + R2 + g, where g is the agreed gap between envelopes. For two hypothetical wheel-only radii of 86.4928… mm and an illustrative 10 mm gap, this gives 182.99 mm. A 10 mm gap is just an example; it is not a recommended safety clearance or an acceptance limit.
Ask engineering to set the actual allowance after reviewing dimensional tolerances, frame deflection, swivel play, debris, operating access and the equipment’s safety requirements. Do not size a production frame to two decimal places because the calculation prints two decimal places. Specify maximum assembly dimensions and the required minimum clearance on the drawing.

Get a QuoteDoes the brake pedal need a separate clearance check?
Yes. Confirm whether the pedal rotates with the fork, remains fixed relative to the mounting, or links to other casters. Blickle’s brake guidance describes rotating and fixed-pedal arrangements, illustrating why one wheel-only radius cannot represent every brake design. That is technical context, not evidence that a particular XIN JIE model uses those mechanisms.
Request the envelope in both engaged and released positions and throughout pedal travel. An assembly might rotate freely but leave no usable foot access after installation. Review the real operator approach, nearby crossmembers and any covers. An accessible pedal also needs to perform the specified locking function; clearance approval does not replace brake testing.
Keep fixed mounting plates and nonrotating hardware in the installation review even though they are outside the rotating-envelope calculation. Ask for side and top views with a shared datum so the equipment designer can locate every feature correctly.
| Feature | Evidence to request | Installation question |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel and fork sweep | Maximum envelope about the swivel axis | Does every orientation clear the frame and adjacent caster? |
| Axle and fasteners | Maximum protrusion including hardware | Could an axle end strike a leg or cover? |
| Brake pedal | Engaged, released and actuation envelopes | Can the user reach and operate it after installation? |
| Mounting and height | Datum, interface dimensions and tolerances | Does the fitted assembly sit and locate as intended? |
Proposed procurement checklist, not measured product results. Ask for the exact model and revision rather than a generic series drawing.

Which XIN JIE product details can a buyer use today?
The public JQ-183-1 page lists a gray 50 mm brake caster, a 1,000-piece MOQ reference, a 15-day lead-time reference and 100 pieces per carton. It is a starting point for a compact brake-caster inquiry. Its published commercial information does not provide a complete swivel or pedal envelope.
For an industrial reference, JQ-211-2 is listed as a black 3 inch PU industrial caster with a 7–10-day lead-time reference. MOQ needs confirmation by RFQ, and pieces per carton need confirmation through the packing plan. Its public page also leaves the complete assembly clearance to drawing and sample review.
These references were checked on 26 October 2026. Neither model inherits the hypothetical 100 mm wheel, 32 mm width or offsets in the calculation. Reconfirm terms for the selected mounting, brake, color and quantity, particularly if a drawing change is needed to achieve the clearance.
| Model | Public MOQ / lead-time reference | Confirm before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| JQ-183-1 — 50 mm brake caster | 1,000 pcs / 15 days | Exact mounting, maximum rotating radius and pedal travel |
| JQ-211-2 — 3 inch PU industrial caster | MOQ by RFQ / 7–10 days | Offset, fork and axle envelope, exact quoted configuration |

How should an installed sample be checked?
Identify the sample by model, drawing revision, mounting and brake variant. Install it on the actual equipment or a fixture that reproduces the mounting, nearby structure and tolerances. Record the frame configuration and load condition. Agree the clearance acceptance criteria before inspection.
Turn each swivel through its full range and inspect potential contact at intermediate angles. Repeat with relevant combinations of adjacent caster orientation, brake position and equipment load. Measure the smallest remaining gaps at the specified locations and record the tools, conditions and photographs. Check that the operator can engage and release the brake without the frame obstructing access.
The public sources used here provide no model-specific installed-clearance experiment. This is a proposed inspection method, not a report of a completed test. Request actual dimensional or functional reports when available, and verify that the specimen and configuration match the purchase. If the design changes after approval, review the affected checks again.
- Record the swivel-axis datum and minimum measured gap, with units and a drawing reference.
- Include the maximum axle protrusion and all pedal positions in the inspection record.
- Keep an approved sample or agreed reference record for incoming inspection.
- Treat load, stability, brake function and handling as separate approval requirements.
What should the final RFQ and purchase order include?
Send a top and side drawing of the available space, mounting-axis coordinates, interface dimensions, total loaded equipment mass, floor conditions and required movement. Mark the keep-out areas around frame legs, covers and adjacent casters. Ask XIN JIE to review a baseline model or a custom structure against those constraints.
Request sample feasibility, preparation time, sample cost and courier cost separately from bulk-production timing. For a custom color, supply a defined code or physical reference, ask whether a color card is available, and approve the actual material sample. A catalog photo or printed card is not a dimensional or color acceptance standard.
Confirm MOQ for each model, mounting, brake and color combination. If mixed-container loading or staged supply is needed, list the line-item quantities, carton labels and delivery sequence. Warehouse location, stock, storage period and charges require written confirmation; the cited pages do not establish overseas warehouse support.
Carry the approved drawing revision, maximum envelope, minimum installation gap and inspection record into the purchase specification. Ask which dimensional checks and test reports the supplier will provide for the exact order. That makes the clearance requirement something the factory and your receiving team can verify.

FAQ
Is caster swivel radius the same as wheel radius?
No. Wheel radius is half the wheel diameter. The rotating assembly extends around the swivel axis according to its offset, width, fork, hardware and brake design. Ask what the supplier’s swivel-radius dimension includes.
Can two casters with the same wheel diameter need different clearance?
Yes. Different offsets, widths, forks, axle hardware and brake pedals can change the rotating envelope. Compare the exact assembly drawings and installed samples.
Are the chart dimensions measured XIN JIE test data?
No. The chart is a reproducible geometry calculation using a hypothetical 100 mm wheel, 32 mm width and three offsets. It excludes other caster parts and is not an installation approval.
Do JQ-183-1 and JQ-211-2 have a published full swivel envelope?
The public product pages checked for this guide do not establish the full rotating envelope. Request a dimensioned drawing and confirm the quoted mounting and brake variant before approving clearance.
What minimum clearance should an OEM specify?
Set the required minimum gap through an equipment-specific engineering review covering tolerances, deflection, swivel play, access and safety requirements. The illustrative gap used in this article is not a universal limit.
